Goblet: Hybrid Project


 

For this project we were tasked with taking our original hollow form concepts and working with another person to create a hybrid of ideas.

We both took the forms and created different versions of what they could look like combined, here is my original concept. 


Following discussion, here is where we ended up. 


This iteration ran into some issues when it came to printing, as it had a gap that meant the printer would likely try printing into space rather than having something for it to sit on when reaching the rounded portion. 


This was remedied with the addition of an extra pillar in the middle of the base, as well as adjusting the attachment point between the base and the top as you can see with the slight cylinder in our final piece. 


This is the final result. 

We both liked the idea of combining the angular shape of the spiral stairs with the more rounded vibe of Liam's original concept. We decided to go in the direction of a "chalice" or fancy goblet, and I feel like we did a good job of representing both of our original concepts while creating something new that feels cohesive. Though we didn't sketch out ideas, we did pretty immediately following our first concept discussion land on an idea that we were interested in pursuing.

Castle: In The Clouds V2

After last weeks class, I made some revisions to my castle project. I added a more structural base, and changed the way that I created the clouds as a response to critiques received during class. Rather than stretching one patch of spheres into clouds, I create several cloud structures and layered them with more intention, creating a more realistic result.  In comparison, here is last weeks.  In the spirit of trying to make a very unrealistic castle seem somewhat plausible, I changed the materials used in the project as well. This castle uses glass blocks as it's base, pink stucco for the towers, and in the spirit of fantasy, it features gold gilded towers, roof, and window trim. The stars use a variety of metal colours with varying roughness and texture. I struggled the most with finding a material for the clouds, but settled on using the "physically based" option, and playing around with the texture until I was happy with it.  While focused on lighting, I wanted to play...

Voxel: A Barbie Coded U-Haul

 For my first Rhino project, I attempted to make a (pink) U-Haul out of voxels.  Though not obviously summery, I did spend my summer moving from Saskatoon to Calgary.  I focused on familiarizing myself with the Gumball tool, using that to place my 1 by 1 cubes in space, copy them, and create. My real U-Haul wasn't pink, but when given the opportunity to make something, more fun is more fun.

I Am Hollow And Support Myself

  In preparation for next weeks group project we were tasked with generating hollow form objects to be 3D printed.  I am unclear if this is printable, but I like how angular the corners are. I wanted to play around with the idea of having lots of open space.  This one reminds me a little bit of an anatomical heart, though it was made by manipulating extruded flower shapes, twisting them into each other and tapering the form.  If you have ever seen the movie Among Us, this is reminiscent of the aliens.  One million spheres, squished and twisted.  This one was made by making layers of four point stars, shaped as a star, followed by rotating, twisting and tapering.  He's just a little guy. A vase, maybe.
